In October 2022, Microsoft Research Asia convened a workshop involving experts from computer science, psychology, sociology, and law to advance responsible AI. This initiative fostered ongoing collaborations, including the Value Compass project, focusing on AI's societal implications. Researchers explored designing AI systems to address the needs of people and institutions in sectors like healthcare, education, and public services. These efforts resulted in the white paper "Societal AI: Research Challenges and Opportunities," which outlines how AI can align with societal needs. Societal AI is an interdisciplinary field examining the intersection of AI with social systems and public life. It focuses on two key areas: the impact of AI technologies on domains such as education, labor, and governance, and the challenges these systems pose, including ethical, legal, and social issues. By addressing these aspects, Societal AI aims to ensure that AI development benefits society while mitigating potential risks and fostering equitable outcomes.
