Google introduced a new feature enhancing routing and ETA predictions by incorporating high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane data. As sustainable travel options like carpooling and electric vehicles grow, travel times have become more variable due to the presence of dedicated HOV lanes, which are typically faster during peak hours. For instance, in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley, HOV lanes were found to be 16% faster than general lanes. Accurate ETAs help users make better commuting decisions, save time, and reduce congestion and emissions. Google's update aims to improve route selection by factoring in HOV lane access, leading to more efficient and reliable travel planning.
